Mammootty in a still from Bramayugam, releasing in theatres on February 15.

The teaser and trailer of Bramayugam feature a menacing Mammootty scaring the daylights out of you. “There are a few horror elements in the film, but I would call it a suspense thriller. It will be a novel experience to watch it as a black-and-white film. I don’t know if it will scare you,” was director Rahul Sadasivan’s take on the film in a recent radio interview. Here are 5 reasons why we think it is a film to watch out for.

1) Mammootty as a menacing antagonist. There is no stopping the Megastar who is at the top of his game at the age of 72. After playing a gay in Kaathal: The Core, the actor has dived into the dark zone with Bramayugam, in which he reportedly plays an evil black magician. He spots an aged getup in this period film. Besides Mammootty has always been exceptional whenever he has dabbled with shades of grey.

2) Black-and-white film: The last B&W film in Malayalam was in 1984 (Ente Gramam). Not only was it a brave choice to make it in B&W but it will also be interesting to experience it in theatres. After all some of the greatest horror films were in black and white and used the contrast with devastating effect.

3) The director’s previous work Bhoothakalam was a solid paranormal and psychological drama that explored a realm beyond fears. It delves deeper into the human psyche and seamlessly ties the paranormal with the emotional traumas of the human mind. Shane Nigam and Revathy delivered their career-best performances.

4) The film revolves around three main leads, played by Mammootty, Arjun Asokan, and Sidharth Bharathan. And Arjun Asokan is one of the most promising actors of this generation. The role was previously offered to Asif Ali who had to decline it due to date issues.

5) Last year’s first big hit was the comedy horror Romancham, thereby proving that done well, horror will always have a loyal audience. There is a vicarious thrill in exploring evil along with the adrenalin rush that comes with the fear of the unknown within the confines of a theatre.
