Jordan Wolverton leads Mount Tabor to 4A boys indoor track state title
Mount Tabor won the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A boys indoor track & field state championship on Friday night, the first boys indoor title since 2002 for Mount Tabor.
The win by Mount Tabor at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem stopped Cuthbertson's streak of back-to-back state championships in boys indoor track.
Mount Tabor only had one first-place finish — Jordan Wolverton's gold medal in the high jump, with a height of 6-08.00. He beat Cuthbertson's Tommy Pringle II, who recorded a height of 6-04.00.
Wolverton, who won Most Outstanding Performer honors, also had a second-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 22-09.25. Gold in the long jump went to Hoke County's William Leak with a distance of 22-10.00.
Mount Tabor also got a second-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay. The team of Rance Springs, Ezra Blair, Jaeden Johnson, and Andrew Riley finished in 3:25.43. Hough's Morris Johnson, Wyatt Stoner, Colin Dickey, and Tim Brown won gold with a time of 3:24.60.
Weddington finished second in the team standings, just three points behind Mount Tabor.
Weddington had two first-place finishes. Eli Clark won the pole vault over Wakefield's Jack Tan, and Hunter Bates beat Charlotte Catholic's Logan Hill by less than 0.7 seconds to win the 1000 meter run.
Clayton's C.J. Martin set a new 4A state meet record in the 300 meter race. Martin finished with a time of 34.36 seconds. Parkland's Micah Walker finished second, but he also beat the old 4A state meet record. He was one-hundredth of a second behind Martin.
Green Hope's 4x800 meter relay team set a new state record as well. Sebastian Percival Shim, Seamus O'Driscoll, Gabriel Cardenas, and Dax Mahone crossed the finish line in 7:55.99, beating the old record by more than one full second.
Jordan Wolverton from Mount Tabor and Ian Mas from Weddington were named recipients of the NCHSAA Sportsmanship Award.
