Oakland International Airport has recently finished phase 1 of its Taxiway W
Rehabilitation project. It’s a multi-year phased method to developing OAK’s one
of the most critical taxiways. Phase 1 was converted around 1,900 feet of Taxiway
W, the main departure route for almost all operations at the primary runway of
OAK. Taxiway W is mainly used by commercial traffic, general aviation, military,
cargo, and even SF Fleet Week air show operations. Construction started last
year in August and reached considerable completion late 2023.
On the project, prime contractors included AECOM and DeSilva Gates
Construction, LLC besides a horde of helping suppliers and subcontractors
comprising Royal Electric Company. For phase 1, the total project cost was $28.7
million, with $19.2 million extracted from FAA grant funding through the help of
the Airport Improvement Program.
As a noteworthy capital project, it worked under the Maritime and Aviation
Project Labor Agreement of Port of Oakland. MAPLA offers local union pays that
surpass federally required rates and comprises participation of financially
deprived workers.
The engagement of the stakeholder partners of the airport was instrumental in
growing a comprehensive project phasing plan. Due to this cooperative approach,
OAK executed two exclusive solutions exact to this project phase:
Using jet blast deflectors to bring construction crews and equipment safely
in closer proximity to the aircraft
Activated a temporary bypass taxiway around the construction site to
maintain the access
