Vista beats RBV in boys basketball showdown

It was like turning back the clock a decade.
Rancho Buena Vista High School and Vista were both relevant in boys basketball again, squaring off for an Avocado League title before a packed gym at Vista.
The Panthers protected their home floor and grabbed a share of the league title with a hard-fought 61-55 win.
RBV (21-7, 7-1), ranked No. 10 in the county, beat Vista in the first round of league play, but needed a win Friday for an outright title.
Vista (19-9, 7-1) led by as many as 14 in the third quarter before RBV cut it to four in the fourth quarter.
Despite the loss, RBV still figures to be the No. 1 seed in Division 2 when the playoff pairings are announced this afternoon. Vista should be the No. 4 seed in Division 2.
Vista finishes the season on a six-game winning streak while RBV had its 11-game win streak snapped.
Vista’s Gavin Guinn led all scorers with 24 points. CJ Coleman added 17. CJ Aldrich and Shay Todd led RBV with 21 points.
RBV raced to a 6-1 lead to start the game, then was outscored 20-7 to end the first quarter.
Vista led by as many as 14 in the second quarter before a Shay Todd 3-pointer cut RBV’s deficit to 11 at the half.
RBV’s girls win big
RBV 51, Vista 27: Looking for a sweep of the Avocado League title, the RBV girls did their part, holding Vista to 11 points at the half and winning 51-27. With the win, the Longhorns finish the regular season 17-11 and undefeated 8-0 in the league.
It’s the fifth lead title in school history for the girls, but the first in more than a decade.
A Division 2 team for the playoffs, RBV should be seeded fourth or fifth when the pairings are set this afternoon.
Kyle Salzler led RBV against Vista with 14 points.
Camille Dake added 10 points, had nine rebounds and blocked three shots. Tiaira Richardson had eight rebounds for the Longhorns and Madison Steiger had seven.
Isabella Mosely led Vista (20-6, 5-3) with 12 points. Ameila Sciacca added 11. The Panthers are a Division 3 team for the playoffs and should be a fourth or fifth seed.
