Raleigh Charter dominates 1A/2A boys swimming championships; West Davidson's Nebrich sets new record

Raleigh Charter ran away with the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A/2A boys swimming & diving state championship at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary on Friday evening.
The Phoenix collected 294 points, more than 100 points ahead of second place N.C. Science & Math, which finished with 192.5 points.
Raleigh Charter won five gold medals in the competition, including two relays and three individual events.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Kyle Su, Owen Von Weihe, Leon Zhang, Alex Lee finished 0.09 seconds ahead of Seaforth's team to win gold. The winning time was 1:38.66. The same group of Raleigh Charter swimmers also beat Seaforth in the 400-yard freestyle relay, winning by more than three seconds.
Individual winners for Raleigh Charter included Zhang in the 200-yard freestyle, and Von Weihe in the 200-yard IM and the 500-yard freestyle.
This is the second boys swimming state championship in school history for Raleigh Charter. The previous title for the Phoenix came in 2017.

West Davidson's Luke Nebrich was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer in the state championship. Nebrich set a new 1A/2A state record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.36 seconds.
Nebrich also won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.61 seconds.
Seaforth (148), Mountain Island Charter (141), and Franklin Academy (115) rounded out the top five in the team standings.
The NCHSAA also recognized a pair of swimmers with the Sportsmanship Award. The 2024 winners were Teagan Laursen of N.C. Science & Math and Kyle Su of Raleigh Charter.
