On february 6, uttarakhand Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami introduced the bill related to Uniform Civil Code in the Assembly. In May 2022, the uttarakhand government constituted a committee of experts under the leadership of retired supreme court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. It received about 20 lakh suggestions both online and offline on the Uniform Civil Code. The committee directly met about 2.5 lakh people and sought their opinion on this issue. The committee prepared the draft through a process spanning more than 13 months, following meetings, consultations, field visits and interactions with experts and the public.

What is Uniform Civil Code?

Uniform Civil Code means that there will be same rules for every religion, caste, sect, class in the entire country. Understand it in this way that along with a uniform law for the entire country, there will be same rules for marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption for all religious communities. In india till now there is a uniform 'Criminal Code' for all citizens, but there are no uniform civil laws. Uniform Civil Code stems from Article 44 of the Constitution which is included in the Directive Principles of Policy of the Constitution, in which it has been said to apply equal laws to all citizens. Its objective is to follow the principle of 'secular democratic republic' in the Preamble of the Constitution.
