A man has been charged with the attempted murder of Det Ch Insp John Caldwell on 22 February last year.

The senior detective was off duty when he was shot several times at a sports complex after coaching a youth football team in Omagh, County Tyrone.

The 44-year-old man is also charged with directing terrorism and preparation of terrorist acts.

He is due to appear before Dungannon Magistrates' Court on Saturday.

Police said, as is normal procedure, the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
