Jordan Goodwin started the NBA season as a contributor for the Phoenix Suns, earning a spot in the rotation while the team awaited the return of Bradley Beal and others from injuries.
Having received a full NBA contract last season, the former St. Louis University and Althoff High star had broken through the barrier that comes with being undrafted out of college.
On Thursday, he experienced the other side when he was included in a trade from Phoenix to Brooklyn and then placed on waivers by the Nets.
Beal, who played at Chaminade and has been a teammate with Goodwin at both NBA stops, commented on the situation to Phoenix Media.
“I’ve known J-Good since he was a teenager, so it’s definitely surreal in some ways,” Beal said. “But at the same time, we’ve talked about this in D.C., here, no matter what, man, if you’re here or anywhere else, somebody wants you. Go prove yourself. Continue to be yourself.”

The next step in Goodwin’s career remains to be seen as he waits to see what options there are with other teams. The New York Post reported that the Nets will take on his $1.93 million contract for this season.
Goodwin started his career in Washington with a two-way contract, playing with the G League Capital City Go-Go and the Wizards, along with Beal. They joined the Suns in the offseason.
He averaged 5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2 assists in 40 games this season but has not played regularly since the start of January. He has single-game career highs of 22 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists and 6 steals.
“I’m excited for a new opportunity for him,” Beal said. “I wish he was still here, but business is business. He understands it. I understand it. And he’s off to a better place. Hopefully he lands on his feet and can be ready when his name is called.”
On this week’s episode of the Off The Bench podcast (pres. Alibaba Group), Jordan Goodwin joins NBC Sports Washington’s Chris Miller to talk about his path the NBA, playing on Bradley Beal’s AAU team, becoming a father and much more.
