Police identify woman killed in reported shooting at home in Southeast Portland

The victim was 85-year-old Janette Becraft, Portland police said Friday. A suspect is in custody but has not been publicly identified.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Police say that one person is dead and another in custody after responding to a "possible shooting" at a home in the Lents neighborhood of Southeast Portland Thursday morning.

Around 9:52 a.m., officers responded to the home on Southeast 100th Avenue, near Southeast Yukon Street and Southeast Henry Street. Officers attempted to contact a "potential suspect" who may have been armed with a gun in a home, but Portland police initially said the man wasn't cooperating.

The agency initially said it was unclear if there was a victim, or victims.

Portland police later confirmed to KGW that officers took a person into custody around 11:35 a.m. They have not yet released the person's name and have not confirmed whether they were armed. They have also not said what charges the person may be facing.

The Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) also responded to the scene. Portland police had asked people living in the area to stay inside and lock their doors.

On Friday, PPB identified the person who died as 85-year-old Janette Becraft. The county medical examiner confirmed that Becraft's death was a homicide by gunshot wound. Her family has been notified on her death.

The suspect's name is being withheld until he is formally charged, PPB said.
