What to watch on TV and streaming today: The Apprentice, One Day and The Marvels

Planning a night on the couch? Here are today’s top TV and streaming picks:
The Miners’ Strike 1984 Channel 4, 9pm A look at how Tory activist David Hart worked behind the scenes to fund an anti-strike campaign that helped Margaret Thatcher’s government defeat the miners by exploiting division in Nottinghamshire.
The Apprentice
The Apprentice BBC1, 9pm When the contestants are asked to make a line of miniature cheesecakes to sell to the public, Karren Brady and Tim Campbell watch in horror while one team get their figures all wrong, and the other makes a fruity cake that falls to pieces. First Dates Ireland RTÉ2, 9.35pm Thomas from Dublin is sick and tired of bad boys, and is impressed when he meets Brian, the kindest law student in Cork. And will teacher Richard from Cork hit it off with outspoken Galway falconer Caoimhe?
One Day Netflix, streaming now Based on the bestseller by David Nicholls, this love story — which was published in 2009 — spans decades.
Hot Mess Summer
Hot Mess Summer Prime Video, streaming now Coinciding with the (very) damp squib that is Love Island: All Stars is this promising little number set in Zante. Brace yourselves for next-level bleached teef, coiffed locks and sculpted brows courtesy of host Rylan Clark, as he corrals eight 20-somethings who believe they’re heading off for a bit of debauchery. However, as has become customary, there’s a plot twist. They won’t be ordering from the pool bar until the wee hours, rather they’ll be running it. Hopefully not into the ground. From catering for VIP parties to cleaning the jacks, they must rein in their wily ways and band together if they’re to win a cash prize. Living and working together 24/7, we’re told to expect fireworks, romance, and the expected roller coaster of emotions that comes with a sustained lack of sleep. Given Rylan likes letting his hair down, the eight in question will be mentored by strict bar manager Lee, doing his best Gordon Ramsay impression.
The Marvels Disney+, streaming now Taking revenge on the Supreme Intelligence, Carol Danvers (AKA Captain Marvel) has reclaimed her identity! The downside? Her powers now seem enmeshed with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan (Ms Marvel), and Carol’s estranged niece, Captain Monica Rambeau.
Raël: The Alien Prophet
Raël: The Alien Prophet Netflix, streaming now Raël (or Claude Vorilhon to his mates) is interviewed, alongside his followers, for this docuseries tracing how a UFO-inspired religion spiralled into a(nother) controversial cult. For added comedic effect, stick with the dubbing.
Orion and The Dark Netflix, streaming now Something for any kiddiwinks in your life; all new viewing is welcome at this juncture — even if winter is on the wane. Underneath his seemingly normal exterior, Orion is a ball of adolescent anxiety, consumed by irrational fears of everything, but mostly the dark. So, he becomes friends with it. If you’re required to watch it with your liddler, adults are catered to, what with it being co-written by Charlie Kaufman and narrated by Werner Herzog.
Let’s Talk About Chu
Let’s Talk About Chu Netflix, streaming now Part-time vlogger Chu Ai (Chan Tzu-hsuan) is a wax therapist by day and a part-time vlogger who waxes lyrical (apologies) about sex at night. Her golden rule? “Make love, not fall in love.” It’s as cheeky as it is bold. Mr & Mrs Smith Prime Video, streaming now It’s OK. You haven’t been propelled back to 2005. This variation is far more inverted than the Brangelina offering. Here, Donald Glover (Jnr) and Francesca Sloane star as two lonely strangers who work for a spy agency that offers them a covetable life of espionage. The only catch is they need to discard their current identities and partake in an arranged marriage. For realz.
The Favourite
Movie release round-up Various Platforms, streaming this week Whether they’re a few years old — like The Favourite or The Lost City (Netflix) — or new, like Upgraded (released Friday via Prime Video and co-starring Saoirse-Monica Jackson), your streaming platforms are awash with movies. Most notably, Killers of The Flower Moon (AppleTV+).
