Letter: Change the parking signs now

I thought I would add my thoughts and reactions to the ongoing Hoffmann parking controversy in Avon. It is a controversy, in my opinion, due to three glaring items:

  1. The failure of the town to require the Hoffmann organization to install simple, large, visible signage that alerts everyone to “PAID PARKING, REGISTER NOW.” Presently the signs are barely bigger than a cafeteria tray and, as situated, unseen as a driver turns into a lot. And, by chance, if you see the sign, the wording is so small, you can’t read it from your car. This present Hoffmann parking system is unknown here in the valley (Vail garages), in Cherry Creek (garages), or even in downtown Denver (meters). It requires better signage to be fair or even effective. As presently installed, I believe it is deceitful to one and all. The Avon Town Council should act immediately to rectify this injustice.
  2. Why are our business owners not more visible in demanding a correction or clarification to the present system? Didn’t you sign a lease with Hoffmann expecting free parking for your customers? So far, I haven’t seen one business owner with a sign on their doors warning their customers to register to park. Why not? And, this system, unlike most modern parking lots, has no method for the businesses we support to offer free or discounted parking for our patronage.
  3. Finally, the Hoffmann organization has clearly moved from being a good neighbor in our community, a valued investor in our community — or even an ethical entity in our community. I don’t mind paying you for parking, but I object to the way you have implemented it.

In summary, to one and all of you — Avon, Hoffmann and the business owners, change the signs now.
