Sadhguru says Uttarakhand tunnel collapse an 'unfortunate human tragedy'

Spiritual leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev has said that the Uttarakhand tunnel collapse was an unfortunate human tragedy.

"It was an unfortunate human tragedy but fortunately, they all came out successfully. Tunnel collapsing happens everywhere in the world, doesn't matter how you do it," Sadhguru said while speaking to ANI on Wednesday.

He attributed the reason behind ecological imbalance to the hydel projects emphasizing that road construction will be easier if done in a 'certain way'.

"Whole if the Himalayas are a very rubble-like mountain, it's not like the Western Ghats where it is a solid rock. This is rubble like a mountain, if you disturb it, it will come down. At the same time, human beings have their needs. Roads could be done easily if we attend to them in a certain way. But the problem I think is the hydel projects, which have created certain pressure," he said.

Controversy erupts over burqa-clad women on catwalk in UP college, Muslim body seeks apology

Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, a Muslim body, has raised objections to a recent fashion show held in a local college where participants walked down the ramp wearing burqas.

The convener of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind in Muzaffarnagar, Maulana Mukarram Qasmi, in a statement alleged that the organisers of the show targeted a religion and demanded an apology for what he deemed as a disrespectful portrayal of the traditional garment.

The controversy erupted after a video from the fashion show organised at Shri Ram College here on Sunday went viral on social media which showcased participants walking down the ramp in burqas.

Qasmi said that the burqa holds cultural and religious significance, representing the tradition of 'purdah' (veil).

"Burqa should not be treated as an item for display in a fashion show," he said, adding the incident goes against the cultural values associated with the attire.

Chinese factories slip deeper into contraction, more policy support likely

China's manufacturing activity contracted for a second straight month in November and at a quicker pace, suggesting more stimulus will be needed to shore up economic growth and restore confidence that the authorities can ably support industry.

Better-than-expected data for the third quarter led many banks to upgrade their growth forecasts for the world's second-largest economy, but despite a flurry of policy support measures negative sentiment among factory managers appears to have become entrenched in the face of weak demand both at home and abroad.

The official purchasing managers' index (PMI) fell to 49.4 in November from 49.5 in October, staying below the 50-point level demarcating contraction from expansion, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed on Thursday. It missed a forecast of 49.7, and only Goldman Sachs and Standard Chartered predicted it would come in so low out of 31 respondents.

The new orders sub index contracted for a second consecutive month, while the new export orders component extended its decline for a ninth month.

Microsoft to take non-voting, observer position on OpenAI's board

Microsoft will take a non-voting, observer position on OpenAI's board, CEO Sam Altman said in his first official missive after taking back the reins of the company on Wednesday.

The observer position means Microsoft's representative can attend OpenAI's board meetings and access confidential information, but it does not have voting rights on matters including electing or choosing directors.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who had recruited Altman to Microsoft after his ouster from OpenAI, had said earlier that governance at the ChatGPT maker needs to change.

OpenAI said last week announced a new initial board that consists of former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor as chair and Larry Summers, former U.S. Treasury Secretary. Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo, who was part of the board who fired Altman, also stayed on for the new one.

White House not seeking conditions on military aid to Israel, despite earlier Biden comment

National security adviser Jake Sullivan told lawmakers this week that the White House is not seeking to place conditions on U.S. military assistance to Israel, days after President Joe Biden signaled openness to the notion that was being pushed by some Democrats as the civilian death toll in Gaza from Israel's war against Hamas climbed.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen, who was among the senators who met privately with Sullivan on Tuesday, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Sullivan "made it clear that the White House is not asking for any conditionality in aid. So I want to leave that very clear.” A second person directly familiar with the meeting confirmed the account.

Sullivan met with about a dozen Democratic senators to discuss their questions about how the administration would ensure that any U.S. weapons provided to Israel are used in accord with U.S. law. The meeting was held via a teleconference in which Sullivan was at the White House and senators were in a classified room on Capitol Hill. It came as some progressive lawmakers concerned about the civilian toll have suggested that the U.S. place conditions on the types of military assistance and how it could be used by Israeli forces against Hamas targets.

Thai foreign minister fights back tears, welcomes Hamas release of Thai workers

Thai Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara held back tears when he met fellow Thais released to Israel by Hamas after seven weeks of captivity and said on Wednesday he hoped for freedom soon for the remaining 13 hostages.

Another two Thai workers were set free on Tuesday, bringing the total released to 23. With their arrival at Shamir Medical Center, the workers embraced one another. "We survived! We survived!" they cheered, and one was seen wiping away tears.

"We are not part of the conflict," Parnpree said in a Reuters interview later on Wednesday after an emotional meeting with the workers on Tuesday. He said there were no conditions for their release.

Parnpree held talks with his counterparts in several Middle Eastern countries with Hamas contacts. He said they remain in contact with him and send him updates about the release of hostages even before the news breaks.

Elon Musk curses out advertisers who left X over antisemitic content

Billionaire Elon Musk told advertisers that have fled his social media platform X over antisemitic content to "Go fuck yourself" in a fiery Wednesday interview.

His profanity-laced remarks followed a moment of contrition in a New York Times DealBook Summit interview. Musk said repeatedly he was sorry for publishing a tweet on Nov. 15 that agreed with an anti-Jewish post. Musk has faced a torrent of criticism ever since he agreed with a user who falsely claimed Jewish people were stoking hatred against white people. Musk in his post said the user, who referenced the "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory, was speaking "the actual truth."

On Wednesday Musk said he had "handed a loaded gun" to both detractors and antisemitic people, describing his post as possibly the worst he had made during a history of messages that included many "foolish" ones.
