Uttarakhand Tunnel Collapse Updates: On November 12, labourers got trapped as portions of the Silkyara-Dandalgaon under-construction tunnel on the Brahmkhal-Yamunotri highway collapse following a landslide at around 5.30 am on the day of Diwali

Uttarkashi Tunnel Collapse Updates: The rescue operations to evacuate 41 workers trapped inside the collapsed Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district entered the fourteenth day on Saturday. The drilling was again halted last night after the auger machine encountered another glitch.

With one hurdle or the other not letting the auger machine drill further and lay steel pipes through the rubble to prepare an escape route, rescuers are considering option of manual drilling. However, manual drilling takes longer time.

“As soon as after the auger drilling machine is brought out of the tunnel pipeline, manual drilling work could be started in the last 6-9 meters,”; said a senior official who is part of the rescue operation.

Refusing to give the time frame of the rescue operation, the official said that the new drilling process today might bring good results.

However, according to sources, the situation is getting tuffer with every passing hour.

“The auger machine has stuck inside the pipe. At least 30 meter of the machine has been stuck inside the pipe. Some part of it has been taken out manually. Around 20 meters of it is still stuck. The ground penetrating radar readings that were given have been proven wrong. The GPR has predicted that there are no metal pieces in the next 5.4 meters, hence the rescuers started drilling with force and speed. However, another gider was found in just 2.2 meters. The 800 meter pipe has again got damaged,” they said.

Meanwhile, heavy machines for vertical drilling have also reached Silkyara Tunnel site.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has deployed ground-penetrating radar on the evacuation site, which can scan up to five meters into the soil to determine the obstacles, and then the movement of the auger machine will be done.

Relief and rescue work, which entered the 13th day, is being carried out by scientists, international experts, NDRF, SDRF, and BRO on a war footing. Officials said currently there is no timeline as to when the the operation could be resumed and workers would be rescued, however, they hope to evacuate them at the earliest.
