West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said on Thursday that although plans were underway to expel Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, it would eventually help her before the elections - ending her silence over Moitra and making her party's stand clear following the recent 'cash for query' controversy.

"She will benefit from the process. Now, she speaks inside Parliament. After expulsion, she will speak outside. It is only a matter of three months till the Lok Sabha polls," Banerjee said, while speaking at a Trinamool meeting at Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata. Moitra was on the stage when the chief minister spoke about her.

Trinamool had recently appointed Moitra as Nadia (Krishnanagar) district president, sending a message that the party stands by her, amid controversy over the ethics committee's recommendations to expel her as a member of Parliament.

Banerjee said Central agencies were targeting opposition leaders now but they will go after BJP after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. "This government at the Centre is there for three more months," the chief minister said.
