After Rahul Gandhi's 'Panauti' jibe, Mamata calls PM Modi 'Paapi'

Two days after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "Panauti", West Bengal Chief Minister today called PM Modi a "Paapi". She said this while addressing party workers at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata. Mamata also alleged that attempts were being made to "saffronise" the country's cricket team.

Without taking a name, Mamata Banerjee said, "Wherever Paapi (sinister) goes, his sins follow him everywhere..."
"The Indian team played so well that they won all the matches in the World Cup, except the one attended by the paapis (sinners)," she said, without naming anyone.


She went on to say that India would have won the cricket World Cup if the final match was played in Kolkata or Mumbai.
"They (BJP) are trying to paint the entire country saffron. We are proud of our Indian players, and I believe that we would have won the World Cup if the finals had taken place in Kolkata or Wankhede (in Mumbai)," she said.

"They even tried to saffronise the team by introducing saffron practice jerseys. The players resisted, and as a result, they did not have to wear those jerseys during the matches," she added.

"Saffron is colour of tyagis, but you are bhogis, : Mamata took a jibe at BJP. She said that this government at the Centre is there for only 3 more months.

Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, in a rally in Rajasthan, had called PM Narendra Modi as 'panauti' where India lost to Australia after 10 consecutive wins in the tournament.

The BJP has demanded action by the Election Commission against Gandhi for his comment.
