Ukraine's farmers pin hopes on export corridor as war cost mounts

Ukraine's efforts to revive sea exports in defiance of Russia's military blockade have given a glimmer of hope to a teetering farm sector in which loss-making producers are abandoning some land in one of the world's biggest grain belts. With no end in sight to the war with Russia, access to the Black Sea is critical if Ukraine is to preserve an agricultural industry that was the fourth-largest grain supplier globally before the conflict and in value terms accounted for half of Ukraine's total exports last year. While makeshift export routes and abundant supply elsewhere have tamed record global food prices since last year, the strain on Ukrainian agriculture has worsened as a UN-backed export deal collapsed and EU neighbours baulked at land shipments.

Silkyara Tunnel Collapse: Welding experts from Delhi arrive at Uttarkashi tunnel site

Welding experts from Delhi have reached the Silkyara tunnel as rescue operation to pull out 41 workers trapped for the last 12 days continued on Thursday. The workers have been trapped since November 12, when the under-construction tunnel from Silkyara to Barkot got blocked due to debris falling in a 60-meter stretch on the Silkyara side. According to officials, rescuers have breached the debris considerably and the work of laying approximately 12 metres of pipeline remains. Radhe Raman Dubey, a welder said he was brought the site to weld the mild steel wire of the pipes that are being inserted into the debris. According to the rescue plan the trapped men will be pulled out through the 900 mm pipes which will be pushed inside the debris till a distance of around 60 metres so that the workers can crawl through them and come out safely.

Rescue operations enter final stretch at Silkyara tunnel, last pipe being pushed in

Rescue operations at Silkyara tunnel entered their final stretch early Thursday with the last pipe to prepare an escape passage for the trapped workers being pushed in through the rubble. All arrangements have been made to provide immediate medical care to the 41 trapped workers after they are evacuated, officials said. The last pipe is being laid, an electrician working at the site said. The drilling of 800 mm diameter steel pipes through the rubble had hit a minor hurdle late Wednesday when some iron rods came in the way of the auger machine. A 41-bed separate ward has been readied at the Community Health Centre in Chinyalisaur for Silkyara tunnel evacuees and 41 ambulances wait outside the tunnel to rush them there as soon as they crawl out.

Silkyara Tunnel Collapse: Rescue operation is almost in the last stage

In a significant development regarding the trapped workers at the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi, rescue efforts have reached their conclusive phase. A senior officer overseeing the operation confirmed that the team aims to reach the 41 workers by Thursday morning. Since November 12, these individuals have remained confined within the tunnel after debris obstructed its construction, spanning a 60-meter stretch on the Silkyara end. According to Harpal Singh, a rescue officer overseeing the operation and also managing the Zoji-la Tunnel project in Kashmir, progress has been made with the insertion of 44-meter pipes through horizontal drilling. However, encountering steel rods within the debris posed a challenge as the cutting machine proved ineffective. To address this, NDRF personnel will handle the cutting process before resuming the use of machinery. Singh expressed optimism, stating, "I am confident that the steel pieces can be cut within an hour, allowing for the insertion of two pipes within the next 5 hours to initiate the rescue operation." Anticipating a commencement time, he projected the possibility of reaching the trapped workers by 8:30 am.

It issued separate statements with the identities and photographs of four other fighters who were also killed.
