Canada Post has unveiled a new stamp to commemorate the upcoming Diwali festival, a significant occasion celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and various communities across the country and the globe.
The stamp, marking Canada Post’s fifth Diwali release, showcases the festival’s essence, with a design inspired by the traditional toranas, decorative garlands typically adorned with marigold flowers and mango-tree leaves during Diwali celebrations. The stamp’s four corners feature small clay oil lamps, known as diyas, an integral part of the festival’s rituals.
In a statement, Canada Post said the new stamp captures the vibrant spirit of Diwali. The toranas, which vary in form, are a focal point of the design, representing the cultural richness of the festival. The stamp issue, canceled in Vancouver, includes a booklet of six Permanent domestic rate stamps and an Official First Day Cover.
Diwali, spanning five days and commencing on November 12 this year, is marked by the illumination of diyas, the creation of intricate Rangoli patterns, and the display of toranas on homes and temples. Fireworks during the festival symbolize gratitude for health, wealth, knowledge, peace, and prosperity.
The stamp and related collectibles are available for purchase at post offices starting November 9. Embracing the cultural diversity of Canada, this stamp adds to Canada Post’s series of Diwali stamps, previously issued in 2017, 2020, 2021, and 2022.
