Pakistan: 'Brain-eating amoeba' claims another life in Karachi

The brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, has caused the death of another individual in Karachi, according to the Sindh Health Department, as reported by ARY News.

As per the health department, a resident of Bufferzone in Karachi passed away from a Naegleria infection. He had been experiencing fever and headaches for the past three days, as stated by a Sindh Health Department spokesperson.

This marks the third documented Naegleria-related death in Karachi's Central district in the last two weeks.

According to the Sindh health department, a total of 11 individuals have lost their lives due to Naegleria fowleri infection (NFI) across the province.

Dr. Saad Khalid, the Sindh caretaker minister for health, has urged the people of Karachi to take preventive measures to avoid falling victim to Naegleria fowleri, a rare but deadly waterborne amoeba that thrives in freshwater sources, as reported by ARY News.

Khalid Niaz has advised the public to refrain from swimming in pools that have not been adequately chlorinated and to avoid activities that may lead to water entering the nose.

On October 23, another patient in Karachi lost their life due to the brain-eating amoeba.
