The mystery surrounding the death of a 22-year-old youth, whose body was found hanging from a tree in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli on October 19, was unravelled after phone records of the victim and his brother were examined in detail. Police on Thursday arrested the younger brother of the deceased in connection with the murder.
According to a TOI report, the victim, Nitin went missing from his village Bewli on the evening of October 17 and his body was found hanging from a tree in an isolated area a few kilometres away from the village two days later.
After spending an hour at the crime scene, the Salon police station personnel arrived at the conclusion that Nitin was bludgeoned to death with a blunt object and his body had been suspended.
Family members of the victim told the police that his wedding had been fixed to a young woman from a nearby village and he was last seen with his younger brother, Nanku alias Lallan. The woman told the police that she never suspected anything amiss while talking to him.
Initially, Lallan was extremely vague while sharing details about the case with the police. An autopsy report of the body stated a wooden stick was used to kill him and he was also strangulated before being hanged from the tree.
Police, after finding no suspects, summoned Lallan for questioning again only to find that recent call logs, call recordings, chats and messages had all been deleted.
Upon retrieving the call detail records that were summoned from the telecom service provider, police noted that Lallan was also in touch with the woman with whom his brother’s marriage was fixed as he also wanted to marry her.
“He (Lallan) gave in once he was grilled with proper evidence and confessed to the crime. The woman’s father works as a construction worker in Delhi and his family stays with him. The woman is 19 or so. Lallan took her number from his brother and introduced himself as dewar (younger brother-in-law). But as things turned out, he started having all kinds of exchanges with her. She was indulging them both. We have called her for questioning and have Informed her father about the whole case,” Rae Bareli deputy superintendent of police and Salon circle officer Vandana Singh was quoted by TOI as saying.
