Police finally solve the case of bank employees' missing laptops

Two house-keeping staff of a private bank have been arrested for stealing laptops worth Rs 4.5 lakh in Thane, Maharashtra, while another is absconding, Times of India reported, citing police. The accused took advantage of their knowledge of the working of other bank staffers. According to a senior police official, the accused started stealing laptops from August. They knew that new employees received laptops as part of their joining kit.

Most of the employees would casually keep the laptops and the accused would discreetly place the stolen laptops in the dustbin, covering them with plastic bags to avoid detection on the CCTV cameras, a police official said.

They would then go to the basement, where there was no surveillance, and escape with the stolen laptops, the official said. The bank, which has an corporate office in the Wagle estate area, initially conducted an internal investigation but found nothing suspicious, according to the police officer.

However, upon launching their own probe, the police used a combination of technical analysis and human intelligence to identify and apprehend the culprits. The accused admitted to the theft during questioning and also revealed that they had targeted unlocked lockers, in addition to stealing the laptops.

So far, the police have recovered six laptops. The investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being made to locate the third suspect who is currently on the run.
