The 28-year victim was a share analyst who had been working at a firm in Dwarka since February this year. Charanjeet Singh had developed a software that could analyze market trends. His work earned him a promotion and a salary hike. Unfortunately, this rapid rise in his career also made him enemies.
After a meticulous investigation, the police announced on Wednesday that they have cracked the case and arrested four suspects, including the victim's co-worker, their boss, and two alleged 'hitmen'.
According to the police, Charanjeet's co-worker, Khushvir Singh, allegedly became resentful of his success and plotted revenge. Khushvir tried to win over their boss, Harinder Chaudhary, by exposing Charanjeet's side business. However, Charanjeet's progress in the firm remained unaffected, fueling Khushvir's greed and desire for control. The rivalry took a dark turn when Khushvir, along with Chaudhary, allegedly hired contract killers to kill Charanjeet Singh.
A police official told Times of India said that a hitman called Jeetu Sharma in August attempted to push Charanjeet off a train in an effort to steal his device, but the plan failed. Despite the failed attempt, they waited for the right moment.
In September, the police official said, Charanjeet and Khushvir went to Chandigarh, where Khushvir claimed to seek treatment for his heart condition. The hired hitmen, Sharma and Bhura Singh, positioned themselves at the CNG station and awaited their arrival. When Charanjeet and Khushvir reached the station, Khushvir pretended to feel dizzy and stopped the car. The hitmen then allegedly stabbed Charanjeet to death. Khushvir also inflicted minor injuries on himself, called the police, and concocted a story to make it appear as a failed robbery.
The police could uncover the plot through inconsistencies in Khushvir's statements. The police also examined footage from over 120 CCTV cameras and cross-verified call records. Khushvir eventually confessed, unraveling the plot, said Ravi Kumar Singh, DCP (Outer North). All four accused have been remanded to judicial custody, and the police intend to file a chargesheet against them at the earliest.
