Roblox: Re-Iterate Our Sell Rating

Oct. 19, 2023 6:10 PM ET

Summary

  • In December last year, we concluded that the price valuation of Roblox was too high, and it is on a path of normalization post-pandemic.
  • The user spending pattern revealed by its deferred revenue to bookings ratio has shown large change is happening.
  • Yet the compensation and personnel expenses have only increased instead, with its payout to the in-platform game developers taking a hit.
  • This path is unsustainable and there will be a reckoning for the company one way or another.

The market currently likes the stock despite the theoretical issues. It did sell off a quite a bit earlier this year but has run up again just recently...including today. Will it tank? I doubt that it is imminent and I do believe the author would be surprised from last year when the see was initiated and then the run-up made it to $45/share.

Roblox still has the platform, and it is growing in quality. I feel like they are stuck with huge fees because they are not done building, but still much closer. AI was a huge cost for them to capitalize on and they had no choice but to add these tools and make the product that much better. Eventually, I feel they can right-size and just let it run in a steadier state, drastically lowering costs. And we always knew about the stock overhang.
