I have been bullish about the energy sector (XLE) since March 2023 amid the throes of the regional banking crisis. Hence, I've not been surprised by the relative outperformance of the energy sector, driven by leaders such as Exxon Mobil (

I wonder if this acquisition is a sign of a top in the energy market. If the U S economy heads into stagflation , then I think not. If the economy is headed into a recession, then maybe a top will occur in the next year.

@Bentley 2 I'll let you know in 5 years.

I like this deal! There is a lot of upside potential in the 90+% of oil in place that is left after primary production.
I agree totally with your thesis and could not have explained the rationale any better than you did. Having recently sold XOM about 15% higher than its current market price and having last Friday flipped my PXD into DVN, I am fully prepared to add XOM back into the portfolio.

I own Exxon for 10+ years and while I am not thrilled about adding 525 million shares after the previous buybacks have retired roughly 280 million shares the deal offer significant low cost reserves, and is immediately accretive to earnings and FCF allowing management to extend its buybacks beyond next year to return the share count to 4 billion if desired. I am interested to know just how much this deal adds to EPS and FCF

@Jlexus1953 and this is why Exxon and it's peers are *generational* holdings, because it's almost impossible to accurately value any acquisition in the short term due to the long-term nature of developing oil and gas fields, all while energy markets go through their natural vicissitudes.
JR,
Agree with your sentiments in regards to this acquisition. How would put any stress on their balance sheet. The only way I could see that type of possibility is if they grossly overestimated what Pioneer was worth or suspecting some major disruption. Market price collapse, regulatory or political interference really isn’t in the horizon because of world events. Even the Bambi state, California, are screaming fire about the price of gas.

Hi;
I like this acquisition, but as I am already invested in XOM with, for me, a fairly large position, I'd consider bying more only as/if the share price dipped below $100.

Best of luck to all.
