The Shyft Group: Facing Both Short-Term And Long-Term Questions

Summary

  • After The Shyft Group, Inc.'s successful transformation that led to stellar financial results from 2016-2021, the company is facing both short-term and long-term uncertainties.
  • Short term, the company's earnings will likely be dictated by demand trends for RVs and last-mile delivery vehicles.
  • Over the long-term, Shyft's success will be determined by its Blue Arc EV roll-out as e-commerce companies invest in electric fleets.
  • Additionally, Daryl Adams, the CEO that led the successful 2016-2021 transformation, recently announced that he is leaving the company.
  • My price target of $16, based on FY2024 EPS of $1.08 and a 15x multiple, does not provide enough upside to compensate for these uncertainties.

I am an equity analyst and value investor, and I believe that every security has a price at which it is an attractive investment. I believe I have an edge because I am willing to explore stocks that most other investors are ignoring, and because I am not afraid to invest in stocks that are illiquid and thinly traded.I tend to focus on small cap and micro cap stocks but I write about stocks of all sizes. I take a bottoms up approach to my research but I consider economic factors in my analysis in order to create a more holistic view of the stock and business in question.I have a background in economics and 6 years of experience as an analyst. I look forward to sharing my research with my followers on Seeking Alpha as I continue to learn more over the years. I post smaller and more frequent updates on Twitter regarding some of the stocks and businesses I have researched and written about on Seeking Alpha. SHYF had a great run from 2015-2021 due in large part to the outstanding management skills of CEO Adams. I was fortunate to have both bought when he was appointed in 2015 and then sold during 2021 when the trailing PE ratio was 30.

Agree with the author that an expected normalized PE for the company in its industry should be around 15.
