Athletics, one of the most popular sporting disciplines at the Asian Games, is set to begin on September 29 and will continue till October 5. The majority of the events in this category will be hosted at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium. The athletics contingent is the largest among 655 Indian athletes competing at the Hangzhou Games. The 68-member squad, comprising 35 men and 33 women, will be led by ace javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who recently finished atop the podium at the World Athletics Championship. Neeraj also claimed gold at the 2018 Asiad with a throw of 88.06m.
Apart from Neeraj Chopra, eyes will be on Asian record-holding steeplechaser Avinash Sable and reigning shot put champion Tajinder Singh Toor. Defending heptathlon champion Swapna Barman and 1500m specialist Jinson Johnson will also defend their Jakarta titles in Hangzhou.
Among others, Star hurdler Jyothi Yarraji and long jumper duo– Murali Sreeshankar and Jeswin Aldrin– will also be seen in action at the 19th Asiad. Praveen Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker will be carrying the Indian hopes in the men’s triple jump event.
India’s mixed and women’s 4x400m relay teams, which secured gold in the previous edition, will eye to replicate the feat this year. The Indian men’s relay team, which triumphed at the World Athletics Championships, will look to continue their domination in the continental meet.
