Indian women’s team will take part in the Rugby Sevens event at the Hangzhou Asian Games. The competition will be held from September 24 at the Hangzhou Normal University Cangqian Athletics Field. The sport made its debut back in 1998. The Indian women’s rugby team are making only their second appearance at the event. Their participation at the Rugby Sevens will see them returning to the event after a 13-year absence.
Indian men’s rugby team were unable to make the cut due to their poor global rankings. They had participated in the previous editions of the competition in 2006 and 2010. The men’s rugby team only managed the eighth and seventh positions in those editions of the Asian Games.
India’s recent performances have shown promise and currently hold the seventh rank in Women’s Rugby in Asia. However, they are currently placed in Pool F among Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore, who rank above them. Hence, the path to the knockout stages is not going to be an easy one.
Japan currently leads the pack as the best-ranked team in Asia. Hong Kong follows behind closely in the second position. Despite the difficult challenges ahead, the Indian women’s rugby team now has a promising opportunity to make history at Hangzhou.
