Pyxis Tankers: Change In Strategic Direction Unlikely To Impress Investors

Sep. 22, 2023 8:25 PM ET1 Comment

Summary

  • Last week, Pyxis Tankers closed on the previously-announced dry bulk shipping joint venture with its CEO and controlling shareholder Valentios "Eddie" Valentis.
  • In addition, the company announced the sale of the 2015-built product tanker Pyxis Epsilon at a stellar price of $40.75 million, an approximately 15% premium to estimated market value.
  • Pyxis Tankers has increased the pace of share buybacks since the end of the second quarter.
  • In a recent Capital Link interview, management outlined its vision for the company to become a diversified shipping company in the near future.
  • While Pyxis Tankers' new strategic direction is causing some uncertainty, I am reiterating my "Buy" rating on the common shares based on the company's strong financial position and discounted valuation.

Two months ago, I downgraded shares of small, Greece-based product tanker operator Pyxis Tankers or "Pyxis" due to

The bulker investment is less than 7 % of total NAV so isn't material at the moment.

Interesting youtube interview which will add color from the ceo which was posted by Henrik earlier which should be reviewed by investors doing DD

www.youtube.com/...

The equity listing isn’t doing them any good if it’s trading at a 60 plus discount

If they pull off this change in direction with new investments successfully, they get my vote for Greek ship owner hall of fame award! I’ve seen many bullish comments on bulker segment. Starbulk and Egle completed major buybacks. Dac made investments and a few others come to mind.

I established a position on news of the asset sale earlier today. As they say "too low too ignore"

I like the discount and think the thing will pop with q3 earnings report as many people don’t follow the daily news. Any buybacks completed helps the story.

In the short term, this doesn't close for a few months, so let the good times roll.
