Parliament Session LIVE: In a historic decision, parliamentarians in Lok Sabha passed the Women’s Reservation Bill which proposes to pave way for 33 per cent quota for women in the lower house. Lok Sabha on Wednesday gave passage to the Bill introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. A whopping 454 members voted in support of the Bill and only two voted against it. Now that the Bill, also known as ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ has passed its first hurdle of Lok Sabha, all eyes are now its next step in Rajya Sabha.

Key EventsBihar CM Nitish Kumar on Thursday said the women’s reservation bill was overall a good move despite the fact that there will be some delay in its implementation. He, however, questioned as to why the the central government is delaying the census for the first time since it began in 1931. “Why are they delaying it (census) so much. It could have been implemented immediately. Why do we need to wait till 2024? What’s the problem, it should have been done immediately. It was happening every 10 years. It started in 1931, and this is the first time it has been delayed. This is not good… But this (women’s reservation) is nice, there will be some delay in the implementation but it will be good for women whenever it gets implemented,” he said. ANI
TMC MP Dola Sen on Thursday said the party will welcome the women’s reservation bill if the BJP government at the Centre implements it. “You must have seen how the decision on NPR, NRC, and CAA happened. AIADMK leader M Thambi Durai on Thursday said the introduction of the women’s reservation bill was a happy occasion for him as he was the one who had introduced it when he was the law minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led central government. “This is a historic bill. In 1998-99, I was the law minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. I introduced the bill at that time. It is a very happy occasion for me and the AIADMK party… Now the (Narendra) Modi government has brought this bill… AIADMK will support this bill,” he said. ANI

Tripura CM Manik Saha on Thursday said credit for introducing the women’s reservation bill belongs to Prime Minister Narendra Modi alone. Thanking the prime minister, he said: “…Who has implemented it? The credit only goes to PM Modi. The bill was passed yesterday. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Singh Hooda on Thursday said the BJP’s intent was unclear with regard to the introduction of the women’s reservation bill, especially when it was not going to be implemented immediately. “…The BJP’s intent in this is not clear… If the intent was women empowerment, then it should have been implemented immediately… Earlier too, when the Bill was introduced in 2010 or 1979, the BJP opposed it… Today, we are trying to pass this in Rajya Sabha with common consensus…” he said. Cutting across party lines, Rajya Sabha members on Thursday supported the bill to provide 33 percent reservation for women in the Lower House of Parliament and state assemblies, even as some opposition members termed it an election gimmick. During the debate in the Upper House on the 128th Constitution Amendment Bill that seeks to reserve a third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women, members also highlighted the need to accelerate the process instead of waiting for a fresh census and delimitation exercise. Members of Parliament of the National Democratic Alliance will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi around 5 pm to thank the central government for introducing the women’s reservation bill, which was passed by Lok Sabha on Wednesday (September 20). It now awaits clearing in Rajya Sabha.
News18 has learnt that Parliament will be adjourned sine die today after the Women’s Reservation Bill is passed in Rajya Sabha.
Actor Divya Dutta at Parliament on Thursday and said the Women’s Reservation Bill was a big initiative bringing women to the forefront.
“This [Women’s Reservation Bill] is a big initiative. It feels really good. The women are being brought to the forefront. To witness a special session of Parliament is an experience in itself..,” actor Divya Dutta said at Parliament.

Reservation should be ensured for backward women and minority women, Bihar Deputy CM and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said on Thursday.
“No one knows when it will be implemented because it will be implemented after the census and delimitation. We want women to get the benefit of this as soon as possible. Our demand is that a caste census should also be conducted. PM Modi has come up with a new ‘Jumla’ through this but there is no reservation for backward classes and minorities and it will be implemented in 2029. OBC people are seeing all this and they know how to get their rights…,” Tejashwi Yadav said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all the Lok Sabha members on Thursday for their wholehearted support for the passage of the women’s reservation bill.
At the beginning of the proceedings of the House, the prime minister said the passage on Wednesday of the “Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam”, which will provide 33 per cent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, was a golden moment in India’s parliamentary journey.
The bill will energise the country’s women power and they will be able to take more responsibility, he said.
