In Kerala, a man named Bobby Jose Kattikad began an initiative a few years ago that will restore your faith in humanity. Recognising the value of food, he began an initiative called Anjappam, which is a project that aims to offer food to economically backwards and marginalised sections of society. Anjappam is a chain of economic restaurants that is located at Pathanamthitta, Ranni, Neyyatinkara and Changanassery. These restaurants serve a noble cause. It does not serve food free of cost, as members of the initiative believe that eating for free may not be acceptable to many.

In an interview with the Kochi Post, the treasurer of the initiative who preferred to stay anonymous said, “We serve food at a nominal cost of Rs 25 per meal, but never compel anyone to pay that either. People who do not have the financial status to pay that are more than welcome to have the food without paying anything. They are also welcome to pay whatever they can. Even if it is less than Rs 25, the money is accepted wholeheartedly.”

What has caught the attention of many is that instead of a billing counter, there is a contribution box where patrons offer whatever amount they want after a meal. With the help of this money, they provide access to good and healthy food, clean eating space and hygienic ambience for everyone.

As per the information available, the restaurants serve only vegetarian food. The members make sure to acquire locally sourced vegetables to ensure not just tasty but also healthy food. Anjappam is a positive change in society and recognises hunger as the primary need of a being and wishes to make food accessible to all, regardless of their financial condition.

According to their website, Anjappam is a restaurant that offers healthy meals during the day; and in the evenings, it is converted into reading spaces with libraries, where the books are donated by patrons. Every visitor is welcome here regardless of their caste, creed, religion, sex, age, disability, income or background.

Anjappam has proved that the world still has humanity, compassion, love and empathy.
