The community representatives have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to give a gift to them on his birthday by not snatching or sharing their rights and reservation.
"Today, 14 crore Hindu Gujjars of the country are standing with the Gujjars of J&K. We request the prime minister to give a birthday gift to our community. What has been given to us, please don't snatch it from us and don't tamper with it as well," said Malook Nagar, a BSP Lok Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh who addressed the gathering here.
The BJP-led government at the Centre has hinted at granting ST status to the Pahari community in Jammu and Kashmir which the Gujjar-Bakerwal community said was a "political tactic to garner votes" and aimed to dilute the ST reservation of the community.
Interestingly, in the latest delimitation of J&K concluded last year, for the first time nine seats have been reserved for the ST community.
