Summary

  • Ubiquiti Inc. has been a great growth stock for years. Recent issues with the supply chain have caused it to decline. I expect growth to return.
  • The company's business strategy, focused on R&D and efficient cost structure, has been successful.
  • The recent stock price drop presents a potential buying opportunity, as the issues causing the decline are likely short-term and manageable.

Ubiquiti Inc. (NYSE:UI) is a stock that I have followed for a long time now. You can see my first article written about the company was 9/15/2014. I was a believer in the stock as a long term investment

Thanks for the great article, Kurt. It is very well written.

The past success of Ubiquiti were due to several factors: you have mentioned lean corporate structure, different business model (not using sales force, and very little marketing spending), and insider ownership (owner operator).

I can add two more: focus on usability and presentation (following Steve Job's design style), and independent thinking.

People tend to follow others on thinking and behaving. There is nothing wrong with that instinct, but in the business world, when "competition" is the key, going a different way (even the wrong way!) could give someone some unique advantages.

Just like Elon Musk was willing to go to court with dealerships in order to get direct sale on Tesla cars, Pera was thinking independently since the beginning:
1. Using indoor WiFi chips for outdoor use in original Airmax.
2. Not charging recurring subscription fees.
3. Not employing a huge sales force.
4. Go for the middle market (SMB).
5. Focus on presentation and usability for "Enterprise" products. (Apple's products are for consumers).
6. Lean and flat corporate structure, with R&D offices around the world.
7. Transparent pricing.

Not saying Ubiquiti is perfect. Its lean structure sometimes did cause some troubles in the past, but overall, the unique ways it does things do make people pause and think.
