Weather LIVE Updates: Heavy rains continue to create havoc in Himachal Pradesh, where the Beas River has swelled creating a flood-like situation in many places. The India Meteorological Department issued a ‘yellow’ alert, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall in the state on Monday. The state government has announced closure of all schools and colleges in the state in view of incessant downpours that triggered landslides– blocking several roads in the past 24 hours. As per IMD, isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim today.

Uttarakhand | The water level of the Nandakini River crossed the danger mark in the Nandanagar area of Chamoli, yesterday night. River water entered many houses and people left their homes and took shelter in safe places: Chamoli Police.
In view of the incessant rains, the Himachal Pradesh Government on Sunday informed that the Himachal Pradesh University has cancelled all the ongoing examinations of Post Graduate classes scheduled on August 14.
“Himachal Pradesh University cancels all the ongoing examinations of Post Graduate classes including B. Ed. exams scheduled on August 14 only, in view of heavy rainfall in the state,” it said.
Earlier a notification was also released stating that all educational institutions in the state will remain closed on August 14.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday said residents of Kudi village, which has been “sinking” due to the recent floods in the state, would be relocated and directed officials to identify suitable land for their rehabilitation. Sukhu said that the state government would also provide financial assistance to those relocated from Kudi to rebuild their houses, according to a statement issued here.
Sukhu, who is on a two-day visit to Shimla district for spot assessment of losses caused by the torrential rains that wrecked the state, visited the Chopal assembly constituency during the day.
The chief minister also said that the state government has released Rs 110 crore to restore the link roads in the apple growing regions of the state. Stating that it would take a significant amount of time to restore the washed out link roads, Sukhu urged the people in the region to cooperate on the matter.
The local MeT station has issued a yellow warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorm, and lightning at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh from August 14 to 17 and predicted a wet spell in the state till August 19.
On Sunday, moderate to very heavy rains lashed parts of the state with Sundernagar receiving the maximum rainfall at 178 mm, followed by Sujanpur Tira recording 150 mm, Gohar 130 mm, Kahu 120 mm, Mandi 123 mm, Dharmshala142 mm, Berthin 80 mm, Baldwara 80 mm, and 70 mm each at Nadaun, Palampur and Karsog.
Shimla received 56 mm rains, while Guler and Pachhad recorded 40 mm, Jogindernagar, Nagrota Surian, Solan and Kangra each got 30 mm
Apart from Shimla, reports of damage to houses and agricultural land are also pouring in from several places in the Mandi district, including Chatru Panchayat in the Balh area and Lot and Dhishit panchayats in the Gohar area, they added.
Since the monsoon’s onset in Himachal Pradesh on June 24, the hill state has so far suffered losses to the tune of Rs 7,020 crore and 257 persons have died in rain-related incidents and road accidents, the emergency operation centre said.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next two days.
In Northwest India, there is a forecast of light to moderate rainfall, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall likely over Himachal Pradesh from Sunday to August 14, over Uttarakhand from Sunday to August 17, over Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh from Sunday to August 14, over East Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, as per the bulletin issued by the weather agency.
The IMD in its forecast further said, in East India, light to moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall activity very likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from Sunday to August 15, Bihar on Sunday, over Gangetic West Bengal on August 16 and 17, Odisha and Jharkhand during August 15 to 17 and over Andaman and Nicobar Islands during August 14 to 16.
In Shimla, three vehicles parked on the roadside were damaged following a landslide at Dudhli in the suburbs of the city. A landslide also occurred near St. Edwards School, while uprooted trees blocked the road for some time near 103 Tunnel in the heart of the state capital.
The ply of essential commodities such as milk, newspapers and edibles here and in upper Shimla areas has been erratic over the past few days.
Three houses, cow sheds and vehicles were damaged near Dagsech in the Namhol area of Bilaspur district following a landslide on the Shimla Mataur road. The administration has vacated nine houses after the land in the area started sinking, officials said.
Kangra Deputy Commissioner Niupan Jindal said that due to an increase in the water level of the Beas River flowing through the Pong reservoir following heavy rains, the Bhakra Beas Management Board has decided to release water from Pong Dam from 8 am on Monday.
The DC appealed to the people of panchayats adjacent to the downstream area of Pong not to venture near the river.

On Sunday, a large number of heavy vehicles got stranded on both sides of the road at Chakki Mor near Koti in Solan as continuous sliding obstructed movement on the road throughout the day. The small vehicles are being diverted through alternate routes, they added.
This particular stretch got blocked on August 2 due to a major landslide in which 50 metres of the road caved in. The road was reopened on August 8 but continued landslides are making the commute difficult. The Solan district administration has stated that only light vehicles would be allowed on this road.

Moving to Northeast India, the weather agency said: “Light to moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall activity very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from Sunday to August 17.”
For Central, West, and South India, the IMD has forecast light to moderate isolated to scattered rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall activity very likely over East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on August 16 and 17.
Subdued rainfall activity is likely over the remaining parts of these regions during the next 7 days, the weather agency added.
