Weather LIVE Updates: Heavy rains continue to create havoc in Himachal Pradesh, where the Beas River has swelled creating a flood-like situation in many places. The India Meteorological Department issued a ‘yellow’ alert, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall in the state on Monday. The state government has announced closure of all schools and colleges in the state in view of incessant downpours that triggered landslides– blocking several roads in the past 24 hours. As per IMD, isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim today.

“Very heavy to extremely heavy rain/thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and very intense to extremely intense spell is very likely to occur at isolated places in Dehradun, Pauri, Tehri, Nainital, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar today,” as per IMD.

At least 16 people were killed in landslides that buried a temple and several houses in two Shimla localities and in a cloudburst in Solan as rain wreaked havoc in several places in Himachal Pradesh on Monday. Many more people were buried under the debris.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said nine bodies have been pulled out of the debris from a Shiv temple in the Summer Hill area that collapsed and the other site in the Fagli area where several houses were buried under mud and slush.
According to officials, many more people are feared trapped.

Rescue operation underway after a temple collapsed due to massive landslide in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh earlier today.
CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, along with officials, is present at the spot. Nine bodies have been pulled out of the debris, the CM said.
“Teams are conducting rescue operations. We are hoping that everybody is safe and we will rescue them to safety,” said PWD minister Vikramaditya Singh.

“20-25 people are trapped under debris here (Summer Hill, Shimla). 21 people dead in the last 24 hours in the state. I appeal to people to stay indoors, to not venture near rivers and landslide-prone areas. Restoration works will begin as soon as rain stops,” said Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on landslide incident in Shimla.
Amid incessant rainfall in Uttarakhand, the building of a defence college in the Maldevta area in the Dehradun district collapsed on Monday. Uttarakhand has been witnessing torrential rains for the past few weeks, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounding a ‘red alert’ predicting heavy rainfall with lightning in six districts of the state today.

“Again tragedy has befallen Himachal Pradesh, with continuous rainfall over the past 48 hours. Reports of cloudbursts and landslides have emerged from various parts of the state resulting in loss of precious lives and property. I urge the people to avoid areas prone to sliding and to stay away from water bodies,” Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu posted on X (firmally Twitter).

“Distressing news has emerged from Shimla, where the “Shiv Mandir” at Summer Hill collapsed as a result of the heavy rainfall. As of now, nine bodies have been retrieved. The local administration is diligently working to clear the debris in order to rescue individuals who may still be trapped. Om Shanti,” Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu posted on X (firmally Twitter).
At least seven people were buried alive in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district on Monday after a cloudburst that triggered a flash flood and mudslide, officials said.
The disaster occurred at around 1.30 a.m. at Jadon village in Dhawla sub-tehsil, some 60 km from the state capital.
Officials told IANS that four bodies have been recovered and five rescued. Rescue operation is underway despite intermittent rain to trace three missing persons.

At least 15 kachcha houses collapsed in the Lal Kothi area in Himachal’s capital Shimla. ITBP jawans are running the rescue operation on the spot. Over 50 people are feared to be buried in the debris.

A total of 621 roads, including a maximum of 236 in Mandi, 59 in Shimla and 40 in Bilaspur district are currently closed for vehicular traffic in Himachal, according to the state emergency operation centre. A key stretch of the Shimla-Kalka National Highway connecting Shimla and Chandigarh due has been affected by recurring landslides over the past two weeks.
On Sunday, a large number of heavy vehicles got stranded on both sides of the road at Chakki Mor near Koti in Solan as continuous sliding obstructed movement on the road throughout the day. The small vehicles are being diverted through alternate routes.
The local MeT station in Himachal has issued a yellow warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorm, and lightning at isolated places from August 14 to 17 and predicted a wet spell in the state till August 19.
In other parts of Northwest India, there is a forecast of light to moderate rainfall, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall likely over Uttarakhand till August 17, and over Punjab, Haryana, and West Uttar Pradesh till August 14,
The IMD in its forecast further said, in East India, light to moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall activity very likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Tuesday, over Gangetic West Bengal on August 16 and 17, Odisha and Jharkhand during August 15 to 17 and over Andaman and Nicobar Islands during August 14 to 16.
Moving to Northeast India, the weather agency said: “Light to moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall activity very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from Sunday to August 17.”
For Central, West, and South India, the IMD has forecast light to moderate isolated to scattered rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall activity very likely over East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on August 16 and 17.
Subdued rainfall activity is likely over the remaining parts of these regions during the next 7 days, the weather agency added.
