West Ham United have reached broader deals to acquire Manchester United's defender Harry Maguire and Southampton’s midfielder James Ward Prowse. Each deal is thought to be worth about GBP 30 million.
In an attempt to bolster the team after selling English midfielder Declan Rice to Arsenal for GBP 120 million and Italian striker Gianluca Scamacca for GBP 21.5 million to Atlanta, West Ham have agreed to these deals worth GBP 60 million.
Maguire struggled for a first-team opportunity at Old Trafford. He slipped to the fifth choice as a defender with Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Rafael Varane, and Victor Lindelof ahead of him. Maguire signed for Manchester United in 2019 for GBP 80 million, a record for a defender. He appeared in 30 matches for United last season and was stripped of the captaincy. Fans booed him and new goalkeeper Andre Onana shouted at him during a preseason friendly match against Borussia Dortmund.
Harry Maguire at the 2020 World Cup
But he was a regular for England’s national team and he started all five games in the 2020 FIFA World Cup. Praising Maguire, Manchester United manager Eric ten Hag called him ‘an important player’ who ‘could fight himself in the team’.
James Ward Prowse has been for quite some time interested in making the move as soon as possible, but he also wanted an opportunity to bid goodbye to his fans. He started the opener for Southampton against Sheffield on Friday. But he did not play against Gillingham on Tuesday.
In the meantime, West Ham United have turned down the initial request from Premier League champions Manchester City for Lucas Paqueta. It is thought that Hammers will not consider any formal request to give away the Brazilian international player who joined them last year on a five-year contract. He scored five goals in Europa Conference League last year.
Earlier on Monday, West Ham United's GBP 30 million bid for Scott McTominay was turned down by Manchester United. West Ham will sign a five-year contract with Edson Alvarez on Wednesday.
