An Islamabad trial court on Saturday sentenced the former prime minister of Pakistan Imran Khan to three years in prison for illegally selling state gifts. Khan was arrested from his Zaman Park residence in Lahore soon after being convicted.

He will be taken to Islamabad following his arrest in Lahore, said Pakistan police.

The PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf ) chairman has been declared guilty of “corrupt practices” in the Toshakhana case by the court, said Dawn.

It reported that during the hearing today, presided by Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Humayun Dilawar, the trial court ruled that charges against the former prime minister in the case were proven.

“Imran Khan deliberately submitted fake details [of Toshakhana gifts] to the ECP and is found guilty of corrupt practices,” he stated and sent the PTI chief to jail for three years under Section 174 of the Election Act.

Ahead of today’s proceedings, a large contingent of police was deployed outside the court premises with only lawyers allowed inside the courtroom.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 100,000 fine on Khan, adding that he would be kept in jail for another six months if failed to pay the fine.

The verdict came a day after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) set aside a session court's verdict to uphold the maintainability of the Toshakhana case for criminal proceedings against Khan.

"It’s absolutely shameful and disgusting how a mockery of law is going on just because the wish is to disqualify and jail Imran Khan," said PTI on Twitter.

The Toshakhana case was filed against Khan in 2022 when the Election Commission of Pakistan ruled that he failed to declare the funds he received after selling the gifts given by foreign dignitaries.

The Toshakhana is a department under the Cabinet Division that stores gifts given to rulers and government officials by heads of other governments and foreign dignitaries. Khan bought some of the gifts, including a precious watch, and sold the same for profit.
