PANAJI: Days after the state government said there are no tigers in Goa, the Union government announced the presence of five big cats in the state - and data shows these numbers are only growing.
The Union environment ministry, which on Saturday released Status of Tigers-2022 report, says five tigers were recorded in Goa during last year's census. This is a rise from the three tigers recorded in the previous report in 2018.
The Centre's report comes as a huge setback to the state government, especially the Rane couple of forest minister Vishwajit and Poriem MLA Deviya, who insisted on the floor of the House that there are no tigers in Goa.
On July 24, the high court of Bombay at Goa had asked the state government to notify the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary and peripheral areas as a tiger reserve.
