An arrest has been made in the Gilgo Beach serial killer case on Long Island, according to reports. The suspect is said to be Rex Heuermann who is scheduled to appear in court in Riverhead, New York later on Friday, media reports said.
Between 2010 and 2011, authorities in New York discovered the remains of 11 individuals along a suburban beach highway in Long Island. The victims that have been identified so far include Amber Costello, Megan Waterman, Shannan Gilbert, Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor and Valerie Mack.
The recent police activity in Massapequa Park is connected to the developments in the Gilgo Beach case, as confirmed by Fox News. Despite the rainy weather on Friday morning, the presence of law enforcement drew the attention of neighbors in the suburban village, who shared that a man has been regarded as a "neighborhood creep", the reports said.
Over a decade has passed, and the murders have remained unsolved since the initial search for missing escort Shannan Gilbert led to the discovery of multiple victims, including sex workers, in the vicinity of Jones Beach on Long Island. Gilbert had made a distressed call to dispatchers on May 1, 2010, stating that someone was after her but was unable to provide a precise location, the reports added.
The first victims found during the search for Gilbert, known as the "Gilgo Four," were Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Megan Waterman and Melissa Barthelemy. Jessica Taylor's partial remains were discovered near Gilgo Beach in March 2011, while some were found years earlier and miles away in Manorville, New York.
Subsequently, additional sets of remains were found along Ocean Parkway, including Valerie Mack, an unidentified toddler, an unidentified Asian man or transgender woman, and two more partial remains associated with a woman known as "Peaches" and another woman’s remains were found on Fire Island in 1996, it said.
