Disney: Everyone Move Over Because It Is Time To Make Room

Jul. 08, 2023 8:00 AM ETThe Walt Disney Company (DIS)5 Comments

Summary

  • The Walt Disney Company ESPN streaming idea is a very good one.
  • This idea may spread to other linear divisions or businesses.
  • Management will not just "sit and take it" when a business is declining. Instead, expect management to find a way to change to take advantage of the future.
  • Cash flow has made darn good progress compared to the previous fiscal year. More progress appears to be in store.
  • Streaming showed financial improvement, even if the market had an unfavorable reaction to that improvement.
  • This idea was discussed in more depth with members of my private investing community, Oil & Gas Value Research. Learn More »

The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) announced that ESPN would consider the streaming route for the future. This actually makes a lot of sense, as streaming appears to be the way that "everything" is going to head. So, ESPN may as

Interesting article - thanks.

Background: 95% of my use of ESPN is college sports. TiVo gives me the ability to watch/pause multiple games at a time with their pause/rewind capabilities when the broadcasts are cable or antenna TV. If ESPN is no longer available via cable then my viewing of college sports will diminish significantly. I do not know how many people are in my situation but if there are a lot of us then the NCAA (or whatever) may need to restructure their TV broadcast contracts.

Question: Do you have any insights into what the NCAA or the major conferences are thinking as Disney moves to a streaming ESPN?

The only problem with streaming ESPN is there price the consumer will pay. To make money ESPN will have to change more than average fan will pay. ESPN over paid the NFL, college football... and now can't recoup those costs

I'm no Genie, but as much as your thesis seems like a Daisy Duck of an idea, it seems too Goofy to me because of the many challenges that abound in the Castle. Every time I average down on DIS for my granddaughter Princesses, I only get Pooh. I am not saying the article is Mickey Mouse in any way because I'm not that Cruella even though I do like to Tinker from a linguistic point of view. Instead of saying to get the Hook, I want to thank the author for introducing a Beauty of a discussion that is not at all trivial because DIS is a Beast.

I have gone from living on ESPN from the moment I woke up to turning it off at night for whatever sport was on to only watching it for the occasional college FB game. Nope, let it die with Disney with it.
