Summary

  • MP Materials Corporation is ramping up production of rare earths, key materials in the energy transition currently dominated by China. The company is expected to benefit from U.S. government support.
  • MP Materials is reviving the Mountain Pass mine, one of only two facilities outside China and Myanmar for rare earths. The company plans to establish a refining facility on-site and invest $700 million in a magnet production site in Texas.
  • Despite pricing challenges and a recent stock price decline, MP Materials' low production costs, strong balance sheet, and anticipated sales growth make it an intriguing investment opportunity.

Introduction

I want to take a little detour from covering dividend opportunities.

In this article, we'll discuss a very important topic: material supply chains. Especially in a period of accelerating investments in the ongoing energy transition, access to rare earths is key. These

@Leo Nelissen Thanks for the article. The cost-sale relationship per ton is a useful number to keep in mind. After watching MP move back and forth between $28 and $38/share for a year or so, I recently took advantage of its drop to the low 20s to establish a moderate position. Would love to buy more in the $20-22 range, but that may be behind us. Company seems to have good fundamentals and execution; macro situation is a headwind. Agree on speculative: would not put my lunch money into MP, only if you can let it sit for a while.

I am long MP.
I have some concerns resulting from apparently consistent insider sales by senior management.

Great article. I had a research project on rare earths when I was an MBA student. It’s been a while but from what I remember, most of them aren’t really that rare, they’re just expensive to extract & refine and incredibly destructive on the environment. Is that the case or am I misremembering?
I’m wondering how much this could limit MP’s opportunities in the US beyond Mountain Pass?

@Trevor42 Yes, that is correct. However, it won't limit MP's growth. Politicians all want MP to succeed and I don't see any major environmental issues on the horizon.

Thank you for stopping by!

@Leo Nelissen I believe that all mining companies are exposed to execution and environmental risks, but my great grandfather after whom I am named was a Romanian cabinet maker, pelt trader and a notorious gambler; so his trading spirit is in my blood. Accordingly, I took advantage of today's carnage to sell puts on both VALE and CLF this morning. A few minutes ago, after reading your article and doing more research of my own, I just sold 50 MP September $25 puts for $2.40 per contract, representing a potential annualized return of almost 49.35% with downside protection of 10%. Not as much downside protection as I typically prefer, but it's a gamble. If the shares get assigned, I will own 5,000 shares of MP for a net cost of $22.60 per share. That's a good price for MP, which CFRA rates as a Strong Buy with a 12-month price target of $37. Thanks for calling this opportunity to my attention.
