LNJP electrocution: NHRC sends notice to Delhi government

Text Size:

New Delhi, Jul 4 (PTI) The NHRC has sent a notice to the Delhi government over the electrocution of a labourer at a construction site on the premises of the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital and sought a report on the matter in four weeks.

In a statement, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said the “negligence” is prima facie apparent on the part of the hospital authorities and it resulted in the loss of life.

The responsibility to supervise the work and take all precautions to ensure the safety of workers at the construction site lies with them, it said.

“Expressing serious concern over the deaths due to electrocution, the NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report that an 18-year-old boy died due to electrocution while working in the basement of the government-run Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital in central Delhi on July 2,” the statement said.

Reportedly, this is the third incident of electrocution in Delhi in the recent past, it said.

The content of the media report, if true, raises a serious issue of the human rights violation of the victim, the commission said.

According to the media report, a new building is being constructed on the premises of LNJP Hospital.

An 18-year-old labourer working in the basement of the hospital was electrocuted on July 2. There were some open wires in the basement that was waterlogged, the report said.

A notice has been issued to the chief secretary of Delhi, seeking a detailed report on the matter in four weeks. The report should include the present status of the FIR registered in the matter, action taken against the responsible officers or officials, and compensation if any, paid to the next of kin of the deceased, it said.

The NHRC would also like to know whether safety equipment is being provided to the workers deployed at the construction site of the new hospital building, the statement said. PTI KND DIV DIV
