In a crackdown on drug trafficking, the Tripura Police arrested two individuals and seized over three kg heroin of heroin, estimated to be worth ₹13.8 crore in the international market. The operation, which took place in the Ambassa area of Dhalai district, marks one of the largest drug seizures in the state.
The accused, identified as Mahabul Alam and Piklu Bhowmik, were found to be transporting heroin concealed within an improvised cloth bag inside their vehicle. The police intercepted a Mahindra Thar with the registration number TR01 BU 0234 at Naka Point, where they discovered 300 cases of heroin weighing approximately 3.415 kg.
"One Mahindra Thar TR01 BU 0234 was intercepted by Ambassa PS at Naka Point. Searching the vehicle, 300 cases of heroin weighing 3.415 Kg and having a market value of approx. ₹13.8 crore were recovered hidden inside the vehicle in an improvised cloth bag. This is one of the biggest recoveries ever made in Tripura. Two people on board, Mahabul Alam and Piklu Bhowmik, were arrested. A specific case has been registered," said Tripura police official.
The Tripura Chief Minister, Manik Saha, commended the state police for their unwavering dedication to eradicating the drug menace in a tweet. He acknowledged their efforts in making Tripura drug-free and praised the Dhalai district police for their remarkable achievement in seizing contraband worth around ₹14 crore and apprehending two suspects. The Chief Minister emphasised the police force's commitment to eliminating the drug problem in the state through these remarkable efforts.
In a statement, Tripura Police revealed that the Dhalai district police have been actively involved in anti-narcotics operations, relentlessly combating drug trafficking. Earlier this year, they successfully recovered 3.5 kg of heroin at Ganganagar Police Station and 2.9 kg at Kamalpur Police Station. Additionally, they have seized approximately 2500 kg of cannabis. The Dhalai police had also made significant strides in combating cannabis-related crimes last year, confiscating a staggering 15,000 kg of cannabis. During this period, they registered 60 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and arrested 110 drug smugglers. As a result, in four specific cases over the past year, the accused have been convicted, receiving prison sentences ranging from a minimum of six years to a maximum of ten years.
The police have launched an operation called "Operation Sanjeevani" under the banner of Dhalai Police, aiming to combat drug trafficking and achieve their goal of a drug-free society. They seek the cooperation of all sections of society in this endeavour, the police added.
