New Delhi: The southwest monsoon is likely to advance into remaining parts of Punjab and Haryana, and some more parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan in the next two days.
The current has covered nearly 80% of India, making rapid strides after cyclone Biparjoy weakened into low-pressure area.
With the southwest monsoon gathering pace, rainfall deficit narrowed to 23% as on Monday from 33% last week. However, some key agriculture-heavy states continue to struggle with as large as 80% deficiency.
While Rajasthan has received the most rains since the beginning of the month, rainfall remains 78%, 64%, 70% and 56% below normal in Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Karnataka, respectively.
As a result, kharif acreage has been lagging in these states which are major producers of paddy, maize, pulses and oilseeds.
"The low-pressure area over north Odisha is likely to move towards northern parts of Madhya Pradesh in one day. Therefore, light to moderate rain is expected in north Telangana," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. “However, it is unlikely to impact other parts of the state."
“Occasional spells could occur in some places in various districts, while intense rainfall is unlikely like last week in Hyderabad," IMD added. Rainfall deficiency in Telangana remains at 55%.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in has caused a flood-like situation in many places over the past couple of days.
Flash floods have hit Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district, with many people stranded and several vehicles damaged.
The IMD has forecast heavy rains, thunderstorms and gusty winds in Punjab and Haryana today. Light to moderate showers are likely to continue for the next two days.
