A man, armed with a machete, chased down and attacked a 19-year-old college student in Pune’s Sadashiv Peth on Tuesday morning, before he was overpowered by the locals and handed over to the police.
The incident took place around 10 am in the morning near Perugate police chowky and was caught on CCTV cameras, which has gone viral on social media.
The CCTV footage of the incident shows the victim was riding on a two-wheeler with a friend, while the accused is seen walking on the road and talking to her.
The man riding the two-wheeler then gets off to confront the accused, but the latter takes out a machete from his bag and starts attacking the man before chasing after the woman.
A case has been registered against the accused under IPC section 307 and probe is underway, said Sandeep Gill, DCP of Pune Police.
The police identified the accused as Shantanu Laxman Jadhav, 22 years, a resident of Mulshi, where as the identity of the 19 years old victim is withheld by the police.
The accused and the victim are former classmates. The incident occurred when the woman refused to talk to the accused while riding a motorbike with her friend, news agency ANI reported.
"This morning, the youth approached the woman who was riding with a friend on a two-wheeler. As the man tried to talk to her, the woman refused to engage in a conversation. Angered by this, the accused whipped out a sharp weapon and attacked her," news agency PTI quoted DCP of Pune Police as saying.
“The victim's male friend intervened and resisted the attacker and she managed to escape. The attacker chased her but was stopped by people in the vicinity", Gill added
The victim has sustained injuries to her head and hand, She was later discharged after receiving medical treatment, the police said.
