Ranchi: The southwest monsoon, which first entered Santhal Pargana in northeastern Jharkhand on June 19, advanced further and covered 23 districts of the state on Friday, the Ranchi office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. “As on Friday, monsoon currents covered 23 out of 24 districts. Only parts of Garhwa in the northwest remained uncovered. We are hopeful that monsoon will cover all of Jharkhand by Saturday,” Abhishek Anand, scientist at IMD Ranchi, said.
“Most parts of the state are expected to witness thunder and lightning on Saturday. The rainfall coverage is expected to expand further in the next 72 hours as almost whole of Jharkhand will experience light to moderate showers between June 25 and June 27,” Anand added.
The formation of a cyclonic circulation in northern Bay of Bengal will result in heavy
rain in southern, central and northwestern parts of Jharkhand on June 26 and June 27, the IMD said. It, however, issued an orange alert for lightning strikes.
Overnight, Chandwa in Latehar received 65 mm rain, which was the highest in the state in the past 24 hours. Garhwa received 56.5 mm rain while Kurdeg in Simdega recorded 32.2 mm. Chaibasa recorded 31 mm rain while Bishunpur in Gumla recorded 30 mm.
