The India Meteorological Department announced an orange alert for Mumbai as torrential rain left wide swathes of the city and neighbouring areas waterlogged. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation also urged people to take relevant precautions amid the downpour.

“As informed by the India Meteorological Department, in view of continuous and more spells expected, Mumbai is being upgraded to Orange Alert for next 24 hours. Citizens are requested to take necessary precautions," the BMC tweeted.

As per the Met department the southwest monsoon is likely to reach the city today. The IMD had earlier issued a 'yellow alert' for Mumbai and predicted heavy rainfall in the next 4-5 days.

"Rainfall intensity to gradually increase over parts of Maharashtra during next 4-5 days. Indication of expected severe weather in the next 5 days, " the Regional Meteorological Centre had said.

Several major throughfares were waterlogged by Saturday evening, leading to traffic snarls and diversions. The Andheri subway was closed for vehicular movements while other roads and flyovers were severely waterlogged.
