LUCKNOW: The southwest monsoon arrived in UP on Friday, five days behind the normal date and covered northeastern districts including parts of Siddharthanagar, Deoria, Maharajganj and Gorakhpur.

"A strong flow of easterly winds due to a cyclonic circulation over central parts of the state and an east-west trough running from south Punjab to UP is responsible for pushing the monsoon into the state," said Mohammad Danish, senior scientist at the Met department. The currents are expected to advance further in the coming days. Light to moderate rainfall will occur in the eastern parts of UP on Saturday followed by widespread downpour across UP between Sunday and Tuesday," he added. In Lucknow, light pre-monsoon rainfall is expected on Saturday. The rainfall activity will intensify on Sunday leading to several spells of thundershowers for the next two days thereafter," he said.
The normal date of the arrival of monsoon in Kerala is June 1, UP June 18 and Lucknow June 23. This year, its onset was late (June 8) in Kerala.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon advanced into some more parts of Karnataka, Telangana, remaining parts of Andhra Pradesh, some parts of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, remaining parts of Odisha, West Bengal, some more parts of Jharkhand, Bihar and some parts of east UP.
