Guwahati: The flood situation in
Assam remained unchanged on Friday with over 4.8 lakh population and over 107 sq km crop area affected across 19 districts and one more human death, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
One Nikhilesh Malla Bujarbaruh died after he was swept away by the ravaging floods in Ghograpar in Nalbari district on Friday. One death was reported in Tamulpur on Thursday. So, according to the ASDMA, two persons have died in the first wave of floods in the state so far.
According to the daily report of ASDMA, the lower Assam districts are the worst affected. Bajali district in lower Assam is the worst hit district with over 2.6 lakh population. Bajali is followed by Nalbari (80,061 people affected) and Barpeta (73,233 affected).
A total of 140 relief camps have been set up in 14 districts, where over 35,000 people have taken shelter, of whom 545 are either pregnant or lactating mothers and 67 are persons with disabilities.
On the other hand, according to the Central Water Commission (CWC), 10 rivers, including the Brahmaputra river are flowing above the normal level in different parts of the state.
Puthimari river is flowing above high flood level in Baksa district with steady trend at over 144 m, which is 0.21 m above its high flood level, while it is above danger level in Kamrup district. The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level in Jorhat in upper Assam and Dhubri in lower Assam and above normal in Sonitpur, Goalpara and Dibrugarh districts.
The CWC in its advisory stated that since rainfall has decreased in Assam, the water level is expected to abate in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries in the coming two to three days.
The ASDMA said an embankment on the left bank of river Chatrang in Gohpur was breached on Thursday and the breach increased from 35 metres to 40 metres on Friday. Erosion due to rising water levels in various rivers in different districts were reported on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted gradual decrease in rainfall in the next five days. Light to moderate rainfall is very likely at many places over Assam and other northeastern states in the next five days.
