HYDERABAD: A 29-year-old software engineer died by suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her parents' house in Nacharam.
Sana Patel took the extreme step during a Facebook live video, narrating her ordeal while blaming her husband Hemanth Patel's torture. Though the incident took place late on Wednesday night, it came to light on Friday.
Hemanth, who is in Cyprus currently, is a music teacher-cum-DJ. In the video, which went viral, Sana wished that their three-year-old son's custody not be given to Hemanth and wanted her parents to take care of their grandson. Based on a complaint by her family members, a case was registered under sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 498-A (domestic violence) of IPC against her husband and in-laws. Sana's mother found her hanging in the bedroom late in the night. Sana fell in love with Hemanth, who hails from Rajasthan, and married him five years ago.
Sana went into a depression after Hemanth began an extramarital relationship with another woman. "He used to harass Sana physically and mentally. The couple often quarrelled over petty issues," police said.
Six months ago, Hemanth left for Cyprus to take up a job. "He used to call Sana occasionally. In the last two months, he stopped calling her and was not taking Sana's calls. He even asked her not to call him up. This made her further depressed. On Tuesday, Hemanth called Sana and verbally abused her," investigators said.
