Panaji: Owing to the presence of an offshore trough along the Maharashtra-Karnataka and north Kerala coasts, rainfall activity over Goa is likely to increase over the next five days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall at a few places in the state besides gusty winds and squally weather.
“South-westerly to westerly winds prevail in the lower levels of the atmosphere over Goa up to 4km above the mean sea level,” the IMD warned.
The Met department said that because of strong winds and rough sea conditions, tourists should not be permitted to enter the sea.
“Heavy rainfall exceeding 64.4mm in 24 hours is very likely at a few places from Saturday to Tuesday. Short intense spells and winds gusting to around 40kmph are likely along with the rainfall spell,” the IMD advisory read. “Squally weather with wind speed of 40-45kmph gusting to 55kmph is likely along and off the south Maharashtra to Goa coast till Tuesday. Fishermen are therefore advised not to venture along and off the Goa coast for five days.”
The IMD has also warned citizens to avoid going near weak trees or areas, or into structures that are vulnerable to landslides or rock falls during heavy rainfall or flood-like situations.
“Do not drive into flooded areas. Follow traffic advisories issued in this regard. Avoid going to areas that face waterlogging problems often,” the IMD advised. Citizens have also been advised to adhere to the guidelines issued from time to time by the state disaster management authorities.
