Assam flood worsens: Death toll rises to two, over 4.88 lakh people affected; Know details of rescue operations

The flood situation in Assam continues to worsen, with the death toll reaching two and over 4.88 lakh people grappling with the deluge across 16 districts, as per an official bulletin.
Due to heavy rainfall in the state over the past few days, major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are flowing above the danger level at various locations.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin, one person lost their life in floodwaters in Ghograpar, Nalbari district, in the last 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to two.
Currently, a total of 4,88,525 individuals in 16 districts and three sub-divisions are affected by the deluge. This number has slightly decreased from 4.95 lakh on Thursday, spread across 16 districts and four sub-divisions.
The most severely impacted area is the Bajali sub-division, where 2,67,253 people have been affected, followed by Nalbari with 80,061 and Barpeta with 73,233 individuals affected.
To provide relief, 35,142 people are seeking shelter in 140 relief camps, and 75 relief distribution centres are operational.
In rescue operations, the administration has employed the State Disaster Response Force, local residents, trained volunteers, and civil defence personnel across different districts.
The floods have also caused significant damage to croplands, with 10,782.80 hectares already inundated.
Moreover, embankment breaches have been reported in Biswanath, along with damages to other such structures in Bajali, Darrang, and Kokrajhar districts.
Roads and bridges in various districts, including Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Goalpara, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, Majuli, and Nalbari, have also suffered damages.
Erosion has been recorded in multiple areas such as Baksa, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Dibrugarh, Sivsagar, Sonitpur, South Salmara, Udalguri, and Tamulpur.
Landslides have been reported in Karimganj, further exacerbating the situation.
According to the Central Water Commission, the Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger level in Nematighat (Jorhat), and the water levels of Puthimari and Pagladiya rivers have crossed the red mark in Kamrup and Nalbari respectively.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a 'yellow' alert for Friday, urging people to remain vigilant and updated on heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected in certain parts of the state.
